Timber worktops can add a timeless touch to any style of kitchen, availability of wooden worktops lends them to modern and traditional kitchens alike. Wood is usually considered when designing traditional and shaker style kitchens. However, it can often be seen in modern German kitchen designs to soften harsher, more industrial finishes such as oxidise iron and concrete.

With maintaining the beauty of timber comes a long list of requirements to ensure the correct care is being taken when using your worktops. Timber worktops are not heat resistant; placing a hot pan or leaving a hot mug of tea on your worktop for too long can result in scorch marks that are almost impossible to remove unless sanded out. To maintain your worktops fine quality, wipe worktops down regularly with a damp (not wet), lint-free cloth, warm water and a small amount of soap avoiding the use of harsh chemicals. Timber worktops require a greater level of upkeep compared to other types of work surfaces.

Wooden worktops need to be oiled on a weekly basis when first installed. Over time, the oil build up will increase the worktops’ resistance to staining. However, freshly installed worktops are liable to staining when cooking with highly pigmented foods. It is important to keep the areas around your skin clean and dry, extra moisture in this area can cause the wood to blacken and rot. The regular and continued oiling of your worktop will maintain the resistance to water however spills and leaks should be wiped up immediately.

Timber worktops are typically made for hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and African teak however this does not necessarily limit the range of colours that this worktop option can offer as much as you may think. Solid wood worktops can be stained with water-based stain or dye delivering a wider range of shades to complement any kitchen cabinet colour.
